SAM.gov vs GovBidWire

SAM.gov is free, authoritative and mandatory — you must register there to receive a federal award. GovBidWire sits alongside it. Here is what it adds and when that is worth paying for.

Start with what is true

SAM.gov is free, authoritative and mandatory. You must register there to receive a federal award. Nothing on this page changes that, and any tool claiming to replace SAM.gov registration is selling you something that does not exist. GovBidWire complements SAM.gov; it does not replace it.

The question is not whether to use SAM.gov. It is whether searching SAM.gov manually is a good use of your week.

What SAM.gov does well

It is the system of record for federal contract opportunities. Postings are official, complete and free. Attachments are there. If you know the notice ID, you will find it faster on SAM.gov than anywhere else.

Where contractors lose time

Federal only. SAM.gov does not cover state, county, municipal or school district solicitations. For most small contractors that is where the majority of winnable work sits.

Search rewards precision you may not have. Results hinge on knowing the right NAICS and PSC codes and the vocabulary a given contracting officer used. Miss the phrasing and a relevant solicitation never appears.

No award history in the same view. Deciding whether to bid means knowing who won last time and at roughly what price. On SAM.gov that means a separate trip to USAspending and manual cross-referencing.

Alerting is thin. Saved searches exist but are blunt instruments, and many contractors end up checking manually — which works right up until a busy week, when a solicitation with a three-week window comes and goes unnoticed.

What GovBidWire adds

One search spanning federal SAM plus direct state and local feeds in 30+ states. Unlimited saved searches with daily email alerts and instant notifications, so a posting reaches you without you remembering to look.

Award history across roughly 250,000 public awards, with incumbents, comparable awards and price ranges attached to the bid you are already reading rather than sitting in a separate system. Set-aside eligibility guidance based on your company profile. Pipeline, calendar and portal tracking so a deadline does not slip between the person who found the bid and the person writing the response.

Doing the arithmetic yourself

Premium is $39/month. If searching manually costs you four hours a month across federal and state portals — a conservative estimate for anyone tracking more than one jurisdiction — the tool pays for itself at roughly $10 an hour of your time. Most contractors value their time above that.

But the stronger argument is not time, it is the bid you did not see. One missed solicitation in a category you would have won costs more than several years of subscription. If that has never happened to you, the free tier and disciplined SAM.gov habits may genuinely be enough, and we would rather you keep your money until it does.

Use SAM.gov alone if

You bid federal only, you know your NAICS and PSC codes cold, and you have time each week to search deliberately. Plenty of contractors win this way and pay nothing.

Consider GovBidWire if

Your work crosses federal and SLED, an hour of your time is worth more than $12, or you have lost a bid you would have won simply because you saw it too late.
